ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is asking the Minnesota Court of Appeals to intervene, after Mille Lacs County Judge Matthew Quinn ordered that several felons he sentenced cannot vote again until after they finish probation, while also declaring the state’s new felon voting law unconstitutional.
Ellison said Quinn exceeded his authority and is also “wrong on the law,” and wants the appeals court to issue what’s termed a Writ of Prohibition. Ellison said if the Court of Appeals grants that Writ of Prohibition and Quinn doesn’t comply, “then… he’s got problems.”
Top Democrats are concerned that other judges could follow Quinn’s lead.
Secretary of State Steve Simon said he doesn’t want “anyone else to draw inspiration from what this judge has done.”
