MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – Republican state Sen. Warren Limmer from Maple Grove is joining the victim’s family and others, asking a judge to reject a plea deal that would give an alleged accomplice in a Minneapolis carjacking murder a one-year sentence in the county jail.
Hennepin County lead prosecutor Mary Moriarty said Husayn Braveheart, 15 at the time of the crime, responded so well to programs that he’d “be in a much worse place coming out of prison.”
“Comes a time when you have to realize that – despite the fact that you may be subject to rehabilitation – there still is a penalty to be paid for the crime against an innocent citizen,” Senator Limmer said.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has declined to step in. He said county attorneys are elected to exercise their judgment to secure safety and justice in their communities, and are accountable to voters for their decisions.
