GOLDEN VALLEY, MINN. – Now that recreational marijuana is legal in Minnesota veterinarians across the state are anticipating an increase in animal-related exposure.
Dr. Graham Brayshaw, a veterinarian with the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley says while no cases have come to the Golden Valley clinic yet, he has followed cases in other states where cannabis is legal.
Brayshaw says there are some clinics in Colorado that have reported a four-fold increase in marijuana toxicity cases coming into them after it was legalized. He expects to see more marijuana toxicity in the animals, especially dogs now that it’s legalized in Minnesota.
Brayshaw says when animals consume THC they can experience symptoms like lethargy, slow heart rate, depression, and exhaustion. In other cases, animals could appear hyperactive or experience seizures.
