Singer, Song Writer and Beach Enthusiast Jimmy Buffet died on Friday, September 1st 2023.
Even if you never saw Jimmy Buffet perform, you undoubtably know the lyrics to his songs, you might have eaten at one of his restaurants, drank his signature beer or were told “You look like Jimmy Buffet” when wearing some beach clothing.
I recall speaking with some Parrot Heads, the name given to his fans, in Wisconsin years ago after a several day concert series. They spoke about how many times they had seen him live, chance encounters with him in small venues and their personal recipe for the best margaritas. For lack of a better word, these folks were obsessed. And I was jealous. They had a connection that was so strong and so deep, I’ve never had been a fan of something so richly.
His laid back lifestyle represented a dream that so many desired and appreciated. You found it in his lyrics. The idea of baking in the sun with a cold drink in your hand was attainable AND enjoyable. He allowed folks to feel home in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and a flip flop. What a guy.
Jimmy Buffet’s lyrics will live on for decades and new Parrot Heads will continue to flock to the destinations he sung so fondly about over the years.
A true sign that you are a massive part of the pop culture atmosphere is when you are parodied and people can instantly recognize it. This was the case in the movie “Club Dread” where the writers created the character Coconut Pete, played by Bill Paxton, who had a hit with “Pina Colada-burg.” When I saw the movie I could only imagine how many Jimmy Buffet fans were tickled by the idea of an inside joke shared by millions of people.
