MAHNOMEN, MINNESOTA – A husband and wife have donated $1 million to St. Michael’s School in the small community of Mahnomen, Minnesota.
Urban Neisen is an alumnus. The 85-year-old retired banker graduated as an 8th grader from the school in 1952 and finished his education at Mahnomen High School in 1956 where he met his wife, Rita, a fellow classmate. Asked about his gift to the school, he said he needed to give back and pay it forward. Neisen said St. Michael’s School also taught him to work.
The $1 million gift will be used to match philanthropic support for the school which has been operating for nearly 100 years. Two other major gifts have also recently been given to the school. The donation from the Neisen’s followed two other major gifts. There have been 131 donors.
The total raised for the campaign so far is slightly more than $2.5 million, aimed at increasing the Catholic school’s current endowment by $3 million. The interest is expected to provide funding to supplement the school’s budget.
