MINNEAPOLIS – Scientists at the University of Minnesota are trying to prevent the spread of a parasite that has been killing moose in the northeast corner of the state. U of M researcher Taylor Garwood says their study confirmed moose were eating slugs and snails which are known to host brain worms.
Garwood says, “We’re hoping that information could be used in turn to look at which types of forest management treatments might reduce the number of those slugs or snails on the landscape, and therefore hopefully reduce transmission to moose.”
The parasite is blamed for a 58 percent decline in moose numbers between 2006 and 2017. Garwood says one of the goals is to return the population to a healthy level so for moose hunting.
