ST. PAUL, Minn. – Police departments in Minnesota are expressing concerns about a new law that limits the types of restraints school resource officers can use to control students.
Members of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association met with the state attorney general Monday to discuss the law. The association wants the state to clarify sections of the law that prohibit prone restraints and the use of compression restraints on some parts of the body.
Law enforcement officials say the new law creates an unsafe environment in schools and could expose officers to civil lawsuits.
Governor Tim Walz says the law is being misinterpreted by law enforcement and that “we should all agree that we should not kneel on the necks of students unless someone’s life is at risk.”
