ST. PAUL, Minn. – A bill passed this year by the Minnesota Legislature will now open original birth records to adopted people born in the state who are 18 or older starting July 1, 2024.
Minnesota Department of Health State Registrar Molly Crawford said this is important, as currently, adopted people’s original birth certificates are sealed, and replaced with their new names and adopted parents’ names.
“Access to that original record is very restricted,” Crawford said. “As you can imagine, some adopted people really want to know that information and they aren’t eligible to get it.”
A new form is available on the department’s website as the new law is implemented.
The new law will also allow people who placed children up for adoption to indicate a preference for being contacted by the adopted person.
