MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO/WCCO) – Minneapolis-based Target has changed its dress code to allow more of its workers to wear shorts on the job, another move away from the iconic red shirt and khaki pants uniform the store was known for.
According to the company, the main reason behind the dress code change is the current weather across the country.
With extreme heat hitting the U.S. from coast-to-coast, the company said it will now allow a “majority” of employees to wear shorts at work. However, Target did not specify how many of its 440,000 employees would be affected under the change.
Until now, the company only allowed those who work outside to wear shorts.
Target has put in place other policies for its employees who have to work in the extreme heat, including allowing workers to take frequent water breaks and breaks from the heat.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Act requires companies to provide workplaces free of known safety and health hazards, which includes working in hazards caused by extreme heat.
