MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO/WCCO) – Minneapolis police continue to search for the driver of a stolen car that slammed into another, killing its driver and then fleeing the scene Tuesday night.
The incident is the latest involving a stolen vehicle – in particular, a Hyundai. That brand, along with Kia, is much more prone to theft.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said those brands do not have anti-theft safeguards like most others do, which is why his office is pursuing legal action against the auto manufacturers.
Ellison said while those who are stealing the vehicles need to be held accountable, so do the car companies, who he said have ignored pleas to fix their shortcomings.
“They’ve been notified literally thousands of times that it’s inadequate. And they’ve done nothing other than half-measures, and the most superficial things,” Ellison said. “What they haven’t done is what they should do, which is recall these cars.”
Ellison’s office continues to gather evidence ahead of the possible civil lawsuit against the companies.
In March, he and other Attorneys General were denied a request for a recall of the vehicles, but he is still calling on them to do so.
