FARGO (KFGO) – Many questions remain following the Friday afternoon shooting on 25th Street S. in Fargo.
Police Officer Jake Wallin, 23, who joined the department only three months ago, was killed. Two other officers remain hospitalized.
The 37-year-old suspect was shot and killed.
City Commissioner John Strand said he anticipates plenty of discussion about gun violence in Fargo.
“It’s a difficult conversation, but it’s a necessary conversation, and we owe future generations this effort – this due diligence now,” Strand said. “We owe our children and our families, everybody; we owe them everything we can do, so when they’re in their homes and neighborhoods driving down the streets, they’re as safe as they can be.”
Chenoa Peterson, a witness, said it appears that Mohamad Barakat ambushed the officers. She said Barakat was in a parking lot near a two-car collision, and opened fire from less than 20 feet away.
Peterson’s daughter said other officers began to exchange gunfire while Wallin was on the ground.
“That’s why community is so important,” Commissioner Denise Kolpack said. “If you see something, say something. Get to know our local police department, and our officers. Participate in the community, and stay engaged.”
Kolpack said police in Fargo are well-trained.
FBI agents were among those who searched Barakat’s apartment Friday and Saturday.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is heading up the investigation.
