GRAND MARAIS, MINN. – A state lawmaker from northeastern Minnesota is urging military officials to reinstate the U-S Coast Guard Station in Grand Marais that closed last fall. Senator Grant Hauschild of Hermantown wrote the admiral of the Coast Guard after two teens drowned while cliff jumping in Lake Superior at Silver Bay.
He said the North Shore is vast and authorities need to be able to respond as quickly as possible to tragedies and circumstances that happen there.
Hauschild says the Coast Guard now covers the North Shore from its stations in Bayfield, Wisconsin, and Traverse City, Michigan. U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar, the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa, and the Cook and Lake County sheriffs support the effort to re-open the Grand Marais station.
