BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO/PRAIRIE PUBLIC) – The North Dakota State Fire Marshal’s office is back under the State Insurance Commissioner.
In the 1960s, the Fire Marshal was moved from insurance to the Attorney General. The 2023 legislature approved the move back. It became effective July 1.
The Fire Marshal focuses on things like investigations, community education, and working with local fire departments to make sure they have what they need.
Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread said that makes for a common interest between the Fire Marshal and the Insurance Commissioner.
“In the insurance industry and insurance department, we’re primarily focused on risk mitigation – how do we reduce any risk that we can see? So, there’s some natural ties there,” Godfread said.
Godfread said there are eight people in the Fire Marshal’s Office, with an additional two positions to be filled.
