ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Fans of the history of railroads are getting ready for the Great Northern Railway Historical Society’s Rail Fair and Swap Meet.
The 50th-anniversary convention is coming to St. Cloud from July 21st through the 26th. St. Cloud has a long history with the Great Northern Railroad, and many railcars were built in Waite Park.
Ron Euteneuer is the owner of the STARail Railroad Museum. He says many of the oldest homes in Waite Park were made from old Great Northern Boxcars:
“About 2/3, maybe 3/4 of the houses were built on car shop lumber of old railroad cars that were condemned,” Euteneuer said. “You could go in after hours on Saturday and Sunday and take the old lumber so my dad’s first house on 6th Avenue all the framing is boxcar lumber,” he added.
The convention features speakers, tours by rail and by car, a swap meet, and more!
