ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota health officials say mosquitoes are annoying right now, but we are not in the prime risk season for disease-carrying species. State Epidemiologist Elizabeth Schiffman says that normally starts in mid-summer
“In the early part of the year, we usually, like at this time of year, we’re usually telling people to be more aware of ticks because this is kind of the prime risk season for ticks and the diseases that they can transmit. And the mosquitoes are kind of close behind there,” Schiffman said.
Schiffman adds the high water levels this spring led to a large hatch of mosquitoes in Minnesota. Iowa reported its first human case of West Nile virus on Friday.
