SABIN, Minn. (KFGO) – Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says arson is suspected in a fire that destroyed a bridge near Sabin Tuesday night.
Just after 9:30 p.m. the Sabin Fire Department and Clay County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 8000 block of 80th Street South. The bridge was fully engulfed in flames which the first emergency personnel arrived and additional assistance was requested from the Barnesville and Dilworth Fire Departments.
Empting says the bridge was built from railroad ties which had an oil-type substance on them and fell into the Buffalo River along with other burned materials. The Minnesota Pollution Control and the Department of Natural Resources were contacted.
The Minnesota State Fire Marshal has been contacted to help with the investigation and authorities are asking anyone who may have information relating to the fire to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (218) 299-5151.
The roadway in the area will be closed until further notice.
