STAR PRAIRIE, WI — A Minnesota corrections officer is the man killed by law enforcement in a weekend standoff in far western Wisconsin.
Minnesota Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell calls the death of 42-year-old Tyler Abel “both tragic and troubling.”
Abel worked at the state prison in Stillwater, a little over 20 miles across the border from his home in Star Prairie, Wisconsin where officers responded to a domestic disturbance Saturday night. The caller said her husband was “out of control” and threatening to “bring his AR out.” Two children were reportedly inside.
Schnell said after spending approximately 20 years in manufacturing, Abel changed careers and was hired as a corrections officer with the Minnesota Department of Corrections in April of 2022. He worked at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater where he was well-liked and highly regarded by many staff.
The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office says Abel was shot and killed when he exited the house and confronted officers with a rifle.
