Ahhhhh, Mother’s Day.
My mom and I didn’t start watching movies together until I was well into adulthood. That being said, once we did…OH MAMA! We got through a lot of older classics, went to movies in the theater and found an appreciation of the great “Mother” roles in cinema.
In no particular order (except for the first one, that is my all time favorite) here are some great movies featuring some great “Mother” performances
MOTHER (1996)
This is the best mother-son movie of all time. The comedy is amazing, the chemistry between Debbie Reynolds and Albert Brooks is so good you will find nuances every single time you want it and the plot is disarmingly simple yet complex. The relationship between a mother and a son. Two people separated by a common gene pool.
DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER IS DEAD (1991)
I know, I know – technically this isn’t a “mother” movie – but hear me out. This movie thrusts our main character into the role of being a single mother and caring for her siblings. The big difference between a son and a younger brother? The younger brother can talk back to you! Christina Applegate has a wonderful turn in this movie that might be buried in 90s clothes/music/cars/comedy – but, just is worth a watch for those moms with teens!
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022)
The newest film on this list. The ultimate Mother-Daughter movie takes on the multiverse. See why everyone raved about this movie…then call your mom and tell her you love her. She tried her best! Even with hot dog fingers!
STEEL MAGNOLIAS (1989)
The mother of all mother movies. Julia Roberts defies her southern mother’s stern advice, her mother of course played by the amazing Sally Field. This movie screams Mother’s Day…and a cake that looks like an armadillo!
MERMAIDS (1990)
Cher is a single mom who doesn’t stay in the same town for more than a few months. Her two daughters, Christina Ricci and Winona Ryder, are loved…but not in a traditional way. This was a favorite of my mother’s and a fine movie for a laugh/cry/mambo…you’ll see.
