Marie Um (Cass Co. Jail)
FARGO (KFGO) – A federal court jury in Fargo has found a woman accused in an international drug conspiracy case guilty.
Marie Um was convicted on all counts against her in a case that the US Attorney’s Office eventually referred to as “Operation Denial.”
Um, also known as “Angry Bird,” was indicted in 2017 for conspiracy to distribute and import drugs that resulted in serious bodily injury or death and international money laundering.
She was one of three Canadian nationals extradited for their roles in an organization that sold fentanyl and similar drugs from Canada and China.
The investigation began with the January 2015 overdose death of 18-year-old Bailey Henke of Grand Forks. Prosecutors alleged that the drug ring was responsible for 15 overdoses in North Dakota, Oregon, New Jersey, North Carolina and Rhode Island, including four deadly overdoses.
