ORTONVILLE, Minn. (KFGO) – One person is in jail following a pursuit and armed standoff that ended early Tuesday morning in Big Stone County, Minnesota.
According to Sheriff Mark Brown, Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a vehicle pursuit that was crossing the state line from Roberts County, South Dakota into Traverse County, Minnesota around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
The pursuit began when the driver fled from an attempted traffic stop in a car. The man and pursuing law enforcement eventually made their way into Big Stone County on Highway 28, where spike strips were placed on the west edge of Graceville.
The car became disabled a mile east of Graceville where deputies conducted a felony stop – meaning officers did not approach the vehicle, but gave commands. The driver and a passenger remained in the vehicle, refusing to follow those commands.
The passenger surrendered, but refused to provide any information to law enforcement. The driver remained in the car.
Brown said, at one point, the driver showed a knife and made statements indicating they wanted officers to use deadly force. At that point, a mobile crisis team was called, and a shelter in place was put in effect for the surrounding area.
Phone communication was eventually made with the driver, which led to confirmation the driver was armed with both a gun and knife.
After 90 minutes of negotiations, the driver surrendered and was taken to the Kandyohi County Jail in Willmar.
A search of the car turned up a knife, syringe, and a small amount of drugs.
