ST. PAUL, Minn. – Local governments in Minnesota want a share of state tax revenue if lawmakers legalize recreational cannabis.
Matt Hilgart of the Association of Minnesota Counties said they’re seeking around 25 percent of the 8 percent tax on gross receipts to cover the local costs of legalization.
“To frame that up for members – that would potentially, depending on what the spreadsheet is showing, (be) anywhere from $8 million to $13 million in resources for local governments to help with compliance, enforcement, public health, etcetera,” Hilgart said.
Hilgart said most states with legalized marijuana give local governments some form of revenue sharing.
The bill passed the Senate Rules and Administration committee Tuesday and was referred to the Taxes committee.
