ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) – Minnesota DFL state Representative Dave Pinto says misinformation and strong feelings about guns is creating opposition against gun safety legislation he’s backing in the current legislative session.
Pinto said that taxpayers need to stay involved.
“The way that our political process, our democracy, works, is that people have got to say to their elected officials, it’s time to take action,” he said. “We need to do that.”
Pinto said little was done for gun safety following the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
“I have a son who was born the same year as those kids in Newtown,” Pinto said. “At the time I figured, of course this is going to prompt action. And it did not.”
Pinto said he is getting push-back from those who oppose bills concerning increased background checks and red flag laws.
“I feel that a lot of their concern is based on some misinformation,” he said.
Flags at state buildings around Minnesota and North Dakota are at half-staff in remembrance of those who were killed in Monday’s school shooting in Nashville.
