Mississippi River Towboat
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The first towboats of the year are expected to break through the ice at Lake Pepin Saturday morning in southeastern Minnesota on their way to St. Paul.
Al VanGuilder of the Army Corps of Engineers said this marks the start of the navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River.
“It is pretty early, but we’ve had some favorable weather this year so the ice hasn’t been as thick as it has in previous years. So we’re excited to get going,” VanGuilder said.
Last year’s shipping season on the Upper Mississippi opened on March 21.
VanGuilder said towboats from Winona and Dubuque are making the first run up to the Twin Cities.
