Rebecca Lucero
ST. PAUL, Minn. – A transgender woman’s court victory for gender discrimination by USA Powerlifting was a topic of debate before the Minnesota Senate confirmed Rebecca Lucero as Gov. Tim Walz’s choice to head the state Human Rights Department.
The issue came up because the department also received that complaint while Lucero – who is generally supportive of transgender issues – was Interim Commissioner.
“It is not fair to my children, or any female children, to compete against biological males, because they will never win again. That’s what could happen if this continues,” Little Falls Republican Sen. Nathan Wesenberg said.
Burnsville Democrat Lindsey Port said trans girls are girls, and policing trans athletes hurts all.
Supporters of Commissioner Lucero argue that it was a judge, not the state Human Rights Department, who ruled against USA Powerlifting, but Lucero’s opponents point to the complaint filed with her department.
