FARGO (KFGO) – The Fargo City Commission voted 4-1 to oppose a series of state bills filed by Republican legislators targeting LQBTQ+ residents in the state.
Cody Schuler, advocacy manager with the American Civil Liberties Union of North Dakota told city commissioners that legislation amounts to a “culture war” that takes away from real issues North Dakota is facing.
He said the city commission needed to “firmly act” to condemn the North Dakota legislature’s assault on the LGBTQ+ community, especially the transgender community. He said more than 20 bills have been sponsored, making North Dakota one of the leading states in anti-gender legislation.
Commissioner John Strand pointed out that the anti-transgender bills under consideration are workforce issues. He said, “all of these topics will affect people’s choices, and will harm the efforts to attract and retain employees.”
The measure was forwarded to the city commission by recommendation of the Human Rights Commission made last month.
