ATHENS (Reuters) – Rescuers have found the bodies of two U.S. citizens in a mountain gorge in western Greece and authorities are seeking to establish how they died, police said on Saturday.
The couple, a man aged 83 and a woman of 80, had been missing since Jan. 23 from the Methoni region on the Peloponnese peninsula, where they had been living in recent years, a police official said.
After searching for weeks, a police drone located their car on Friday in a gorge at the bottom of a 200-metre cliff on Mount Taygetos.
A fire brigade crew found the bodies outside the vehicle. DNA tests are being conducted to confirm their identities.
Police are investigating if their death was a result of an accident or suicide, the police official added.
