ST. PAUL, Minn. – Ramsey County commissioners are criticizing Sheriff Bob Fletcher for sending a letter about new oversight measures to only the white members of the board.
Commissioner Trista MatasCastillo said she’s heard a lot of comments from the community about it.
“I do believe it’s an act of racism and I will call it out unabashedly,” MatasCastillo said. “It was clear he excluded three members of our board who identify as Black, Latino and Hmong. And as the chair of the board, I need to represent them completely.”
Sheriff Fletcher said Commissioners Rena Moran and Mai Chong Xiong just took office in January and can’t be held responsible for the commission’s past failures. He added that he’s always worked in “good faith” with Commissioner Raphael Ortega.
The sheriff is not happy about new county policies that restrict spending and require audits of his office.
