Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.)
ST. PAUL, Minn. โ Gov. Tim Walz Tuesday issued an emergency executive order to activate the National Guard as authorities urge Minnesotans to take warnings seriously about a dangerous snowstorm expected to hit the state.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of eastern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, and blizzard warnings for west central and southern Minnesota, including St. Cloud, Morris, Marshall, Mankato, and Worthington.
The Minnesota Legislature has canceled all business, including floor sessions and hearings, for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday because of the storm.
Officials hope an expected short pause between the first wave Tuesday into Wednesday and a second and more-dangerous blast forecast to begin Wednesday night, will give lawmakers a window to travel home safely.
The plan is for the legislature to resume its business next Monday.
The Senate has already started a debate on a controversial felon voting rights bill, and the plan at this point is to vote on that bill, then debate and vote on another controversial measure on drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants, before adjourning for the week sometime late tonight or possibly early tomorrow morning.
Officials said constituent service functions will continue remotely during the storm, but no hearings or floor sessions, virtual or otherwise.
