BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO/PRAIRIE PUBLIC) – The North Dakota Senate has rejected a bill that would have moved the state Crime Lab to be under the supervision of the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, something Attorney General Drew Wrigley proposed.
“All the testimony we heard said that was absolutely not a good idea,” Sen. Judy Estenson (R-Warwick) said. “The important thing for the crime lab is for it to be independent.”
Edinburg Republican Sen. Janne Myrdal said she wants to make sure the Lab is adequately staffed.
“We have the chiefs of police, sheriffs, and law enforcement across our state highly support us in making sure we get enough money into the AG budget for the FTEs and clean that up and help the scientists that are working really hard down there,” Myrdal said.
The Senate Appropriations Committee is working on the Attorney General’s budget – and Bismarck Republican Senator Mike Dwyer said they will make sure staffing is increased for the Lab.
