FARGO (KFGO) – Following negative feedback from residents last October, The Fargo City Commission voted to cancel the proposed Second Street North pedestrian bridge located next to City Hall downtown.
Four concepts were presented last year with differing costs. The cheaper proposal was laid out for review to the City Commission in December, but it wasn’t met with much support. Commissioners voted 4-1 to stop the proposed project that has been considered for many years. The decision will require the city to give back $2.4 million in federal funds that were to be used to help in the construction of the project.
Commissioner Arlette Preston said she doesn’t think it’s worth getting people from one side of the street to the other with the bridge and set the project aside.
Commissioner Denise Kolpack said the pedestrian bridge is not a priority. She said she is taking the public’s input “to heart” and it’s clear the majority have spoken.
Mayor Tim Mahoney was the lone vote against putting the brakes on the project. He said the bridge over Second Street would be a pedestrian safety priority and the planned civic plaza would build around it.
