FARGO (KFGO) – The Cass County State’s Attorneys Office has charged a West Fargo woman with nine felonies following a lengthy investigation into possible child abuse and neglect at her in-home daycare.
Miranda Sorlie, 42, is accused of neglecting four children under her care between January 2020 and last may.
According to court documents, in one case, a one-year-old boy was taken to a Fargo hospital by a parent who suspected abuse. The boy had bruises on his ear, head, arms, and feet.
The boy’s parents contacted Sorlie. She said she didn’t know where the marks came from, and suggested they could be self-inflicted. A doctor concluded that the child’s injuries were consistent with an open-hand slap.
Another family reported that their daughter’s diaper had not been changed, and there was bruising on her neck and cheek.
Parents of twins who attended Sorlie’s daycare reported that both children suffered injuries consistent with abuse such as bruising on the ears and back of neck. One of the children had a cut on the cheek. Investigators were also able to confirm neglect based on multiple bite marks on the children and lack of diaper changes.
The grandmother of another child who attended the daycare reported the child’s diaper was soaked and leaking urine. The parents of that child said they had multiple conversations with Sorlie about diaper changes after the child suffered from severe diaper rash.
Several of the children who attended the daycare suffered from ‘failing to thrive.’ A doctor who was consulted about the case told investigators failure to thrive is consistent with a lack of feeding.
Sorlie has been released on bail with her next court appearance scheduled for early next month.
