FARGO (KFGO) – The multi-day storm affecting North Dakota and Minnesota has dropped 14 inches of snow so far and KFGO Chief Meteorologist Tom Szymanski is forecasting another one to four before it is done. That is causing trouble on streets and highways.
I-94 between Fargo and Dickinson remains closed along with I-29 from Fargo to the South Dakota border and several other stretches of highways. No travel is advised on all major highways in North Dakota.
Though other roads and highways in North Dakota and Minnesota may not be closed, but are not in good driving condition. There are slippery stretches and sharply reduced visibilities.
Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner was urging drivers to stay off County Road 26 west of Gardner. There were several cars in the ditch and deputies had been using snowmobiles to get around that area.
Minnesota Highway Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow reported a multi-vehicle pileup on westbound Interstate 94 at milepost 7 east of Moorhead. Grabow said there were well over a dozen vehicles involved, including semi trucks. Traffic was diverted. No injuries were reported.
Grabow said state roads have been maintained, but it is hard for crews to keep up. He said it’s hard to see the road in some spots and urges people to use common sense.
State Patrol Lt. Bryan Niewind said drivers that go around a barricade to get on a closed road can be fined $250.
“If we close the road, we do it for a reason,” Niewind said. “It’s dangerous to be traveling out there. You could go off the road, get stuck, and become stranded.”
Niewind said it’s also dangerous for the people who have to go out and rescue people who do get stranded.
