WILLISTON, N.D. (KFGO) – The Williston Police Department and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation continue to investigate the officer-involved-shooting that happened there last week.
The two officers who fired their weapons during an exchange of gunfire with a fleeing suspect have been identified and placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed. Officers Jordan Patton and Tyler Iwen are both approximately four-year veterans of the Williston police force.
The officers stopped to assist the driver of a car that was stopped and appeared stalled in an intersection just after 3:30 Friday morning. The driver was identified as 30-year-old Eric Obregon. Officer Patton recognized Obregon and knew he had warrants so asked him to step out of the vehicle. Obregon exited the vehicle, pushed Patton, then fled on foot, and the officers pursued him.
Police say Obregon produced a firearm from his waistband during the pursuit and there was an exchange of gunfire, during which Obregon was struck by a bullet in the left leg. The officers then called for medical assistance for Obregon and applied a tourniquet on his leg while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Obregon had outstanding warrants for terrorizing, domestic violence, and contempt of court. He has now also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharge of a firearm within the city, and refusing to halt.
