MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead voters overwhelmingly approved raising the city sales rate by a half percent which will be used to fund a new community center and public library. It will raise Moorhead’s sales tax rate to 7.88%.
The final tally showed 64% for and 36% against the measure. Mayor Shelly Carlson says the $31-million community center and library will be the “cornerstone of downtown redevelopment.”
The half-percent city sales tax increase will take effect after the city completes procedural steps required by the Minnesota Department of Revenue. Moorhead merchants and online retailers will start collecting the sales tax as soon as April 1st, 2023. It’s expected to cost each Moorhead resident about $2 per month.
