FARGO (KFGO) – Preliminary work is underway for the long-awaited south Fargo fire station on 3.5 acres of city-owned property along 64th Avenue and 33rd Street South. It will be Fargo’s 8th fire station.
Fire Chief Steve Dirksen says this week a geotechnical firm will do soil borings to determine where the foundation will go and decisions will soon be made on the building design. He says bid letting will happen this fall and construction should start in April or May of next year.
Dirksen says completion is subject to construction supply issues and the weather but the hope is to open the station in the second quarter of 2024.
The $8.1 million bond to pay for the project approved by the city commission earlier this year will not only cover the cost of construction and equipment for the new fire station but also improvements at Station 2. It’s located at 25th Street and 30 1/2 Avenue South. Built in 1987, Station 2 is the first city fire station built south of I-94.
Dirksen says the new station’s location will be a critical component for response to fires and other emergencies in the city’s fast-growing south side.
