FARGO (KFGO) – It’s soon to be a “go.” Fargo City Commissioners have approved a proposed ordinance amending and repealing various sections of the Wildlife Management Program. It will allow the urban archery hunting program that harvests deer to continue on park system land along the Red River. A final vote is expected at the city commission meeting on October 3.
Last year, it appeared the 16-year program was going to end. The police department has been overseeing the program for years and Police Chief Dave Zibolski said the hunt was an “unnecessary public safety risk.”
In March of last year, there was a preliminary vote to end the hunting program, but after public response, the city commission reversed course and a committee was formed to look at other options to limit the deer population.
Assistant City Administrator Mike Redlinger says the next step is to provide public information, “getting the word out about the changes” as soon as possible.
Removing the police department from the program is among the revisions. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the Sandhills Archery club will handle most of the administration of the program.
The hunt usually runs from September to January 31.
