FARGO (KFGO) – Construction has just started on the Newman Homes project in north Fargo. Roers Construction and Development is building a row of seven townhomes on the east side of the St. Paul’s Newman Center block in north Fargo.
Permits have been issued following several months of controversy, legal issues, and a settlement agreement that was reached between company president Jim Roers and the city commission last week.
Excavators have started digging building foundations. The agreement requires the townhomes to be completed by May 31, 2023, or Roers will face penalties. Roers said he expects the project to be completed before that deadline.
The townhomes are part of a project that includes St. Paul’s Newman Center, faith-based housing, and the “View on University Apartments.” Roers said only one other part of the huge project is yet to be completed. He says it may take 10 to 12 months to complete the sanctuary because of the “very, very detailed work that will be used inside.”
Roers failed to build the townhomes by the original December 2021 deadline and several months ago, the city found the company in default and gave Roers 60 days to correct it.
Roers had asked the city for an extension to build the townhomes due to skyrocketing increases in the cost of construction materials caused by the pandemic. Those costs have since decreased.
