FARGO, N.D. — It took a thunderstorm to stop the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (27-11) five-game winning streak as the Kane County Cougars (20-17) won the series opener by a score of 3-1 on Friday night. The game was called after the top of the sixth inning due to a severe thunderstorm that rolled through North Fargo.
The RedHawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a Leo Piña RBI single. The run was unearned, as Manny Boscan reached scoring position on a passed ball. Kane County right-handed starter Jack Fox (3-0) gave up the run but earned the win after allowing only two hits in five innings pitched.
The Cougars scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning on three singles and a double. Left fielder Cornelius Randolph went 3-for-3 and scored a run in the win. Third baseman Dylan Busby (2-for-3, run) and right fielder Nick Anderson (2-for-3, RBI) also had multiple hits in the game.
LHP Peyton Wigginton (1-1) earned the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched. Wigginton struck out four batters in his second start of the year. RHP Tanner Riley pitched in the sixth and allowed two hits and a walk but struck out two batters to escape the inning scoreless.
The RedHawks and Cougars will continue with game two in a three-game series tomorrow at Newman Outdoor Field. Davis Feldman (3-2, 2.97 ERA) will get the start for the RedHawks as Ben Allison (3-3, 4.90 ERA) will take the mound for the Cougars. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m.
