BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO KCND) – North Dakota’s Department of Transportation is reminding people about an upcoming deadline to obtain a Real ID driver’s license or ID card.
The deadline is May 3rd, 2023, at which time a REAL ID or a passport will be required to board a commercial airline according to Brad Schaffer. He is DOT’s Driver’s License Division Director.
“A REAL ID creates security measures designed to reduce identity fraud and provide the highest certainty an individual is who they say they are,” Schaffer said.
Schaffer says 51 percent of North Dakotans have a real ID – slightly higher than the national average of 49 percent. He says the pandemic slowed things down. But Schaffer says now that things are more open, DOT wants to make the push now, so that anyone who wants a Real ID can get one.
You can find detail about what you need to obtain a REAL ID here.
Schaffer says you will need to make an appointment at your local driver’s license office. He says many can be “same day” appointments.
