FARGO (KFGO) – A GoFundMe account has been established to raise money to cover medical costs for 21-year-old Lucia Garcia and her seven-month-old son, Dominique. They were shot by Malik Gill, the baby’s father on Wednesday at Plaza Azteca restaurant in Fargo.
According to her family, writing on the GoFundMe page, Lucia had a gunshot wound to the upper right chest area. CPR was performed during the ambulance transfer to the hospital. She was taken to surgery to repair an artery which caused her to lose almost all of her blood. She is in stable condition and will need another surgery.
The baby boy was wounded on the left thigh, the left side of his stomach, with the bullet exiting through his hand. Surgery was performed on Dominique and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Gill, who was a convicted felon, fled the shooting and shot and killed himself in Clay County following a pursuit with deputies.
Family members said the relationship between the two had always been troubled but Lucia insisted on making their relationship work for the sake of baby Dominique.
In addition to the GoFundMe fundraiser, Plaza Azteca where the shooting happened, reopens Friday with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the family.
