The South Dakota State University Dairy Club will host the 17th Annual Jackrabbit Dairy Camp June 9-11 on the SDSU campus in Brookings. After the camp was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club has a strong lineup of events planned for this year to include activities requested from past campers.
“Camp is a great opportunity for youth to come in and learn the basics of showing dairy cattle,” said Tiffany VanBuren, Dairy Camp lead chair and senior dairy production and agricultural communications student from Waupun, Wisconsin. “Even if they have some experience, it’s a great way to refresh their skills.”
Jackrabbit Dairy Camp is open to youth ages 7 to 17 who have a passion for the dairy industry. Attendees can expect to participate in a wide variety of activities to learn more about the industry including showmanship and fitting clinics, a mock dairy show on Saturday, June 11, an artificial insemination (AI) session for older campers and a tour of the SDSU campus.
Registration is now open – prior experience fitting and showing dairy heifers is not a requirement. Past campers who are still eligible for camp should have received registration documents via mail. First-time campers who would like to register can contact Tiffany VanBuren or message the SDSU Dairy Club Facebook page. Registration will close Thursday, May 5.
“Camp is open to all youth who are passionate about the dairy industry,” said VanBuren. “We can’t wait to see everyone this summer.”
