BURLINGTON, N.D. – More than a dozen cars of an eastbound BNSF train derailed between Minot and Des Lacs, North Dakota around 1 a.m. Sunday. There were no injuries.
A BNSF spokesperson said the railcars contained paper products and frozen foods that caught fire. Railcars carrying hazardous materials on the train did not leave the tracks and had been pulled away from the fire.
In response to a request from Burlington Fire Chief Karter Lassman, Governor Burgum authorized the North Dakota National Guard to launch a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from Bismarck with a 600-gallon water bucket to assist in putting the fire out Sunday afternoon.
Several homes near the derailment were evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation
