ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota House will likely pass a bill this afternoon requiring the state to divest its holdings in entities in Russia and Belarus, prompted by the attack on Ukraine.
Minneapolis Democrat Sydney Jordan is sponsoring the measure. She says, “we can’t allow a single cent from our state to line the pockets of oligarch(s) and despots who sanction the murder of innocent civilians.” A similar bill awaits a vote in the Minnesota Senate, where Big Lake Republican Mary Kiffmeyer says, “we all want to do what we can.”
The proposed legislation would also prohibit state agencies from having contracts with companies in Russia and Belarus — similar to a recent executive order by Governor Tim Walz.
