FAIRMOUNT, N.D. (KFGO) – A man is in jail after an hours-long standoff in Fairmount southeast of Wahpeton.
Adam Prochnow had refused to come out of his house after setting fire to the garage. The fire was started as investigators were preparing to arrest Prochnow for using an explosive device that went off in the lobby of the law enforcement center in Wahpeton Tuesday night.
“They identified the device to be an incendiary device, but when we started looking at it closer, we think this was probably an improvised IED,” Richland County Sheriff Larry Leshovsky said. “Looking at it, there was some things in there that would indicate that it was meant to cause a lot more damage than it actually did.”
Prochnow had sent social media messages as police were closing in saying he was upset with the world.
Red River Valley SWAT, federal ATF agents, deputies, and State Crime Bureau agents were getting ready to move in when Prochnow set the garage on fire.
“In the process of actually putting together the briefings to do this high-risk search warrant with the SWAT team, we ended up finding out that he had lit a fire and that’s where this garage had been burned up,” Leshovsky said. “So, that escalated it a lot quicker, so we had to mobilize and get ourselves into position.”
Streets were blocked off and the school was placed on lockdown.
