ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota saw another drop in public school enrollment for the 2021-22 school year, though not as large a decline as the year before.
The trend coincided with an increase in private school enrollment. Both factors are triggering more debate at the state legislature over education funding. Governor Tim Walz wants a two-percent increase on the general funding formula, which all school districts would receive.
Senate Republicans are pushing Education Savings Accounts, which Democratic opponents label as another version of school vouchers. Republicans respond parents should be able to send their children where they believe they can get the best education.
