FARGO (KFGO) – Blizzard conditions have shut down a number of roads in eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) has closed Interstate 29 from Fargo to the Canadian border due to blowing snow and near-zero visibility. Minn-DOT and state patrol has closed I-94 from Moorhead to Fergus Falls. Motorists are not allowed to travel on a closed road due to life-threatening conditions.
No travel is advised in much of the Red River Valley, including Cass and Clay Counties.
Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting asked drivers to avoid taking county roads as an alternate route to the closed interstate, saying they are no better and may be even worse in many cases.
“Those winds are making their way into the Valley from north to south. As to conditions on I-29 right now, with the temperature changing, we’ve got icy roads combined with zero visibility,” said NDHP Captain Brian Niewind.
A portion of I-94 westbound west of Valley City is closed to clear an accident. NDHP reported multiple vehicles are involved and there are multiple injuries.
On the Minnesota side, Highway 10 between Moorhead and Detroit Lakes is also closed.
