THIEF RIVER FALLS, MINN. (KFGO) – A father and son from West Fargo are on the ride of their life. Roger and Wyatt Kram are driving classic 1973 John Deere snowmobiles on the route of what was known as the Winnipeg to St. Paul I-500 snowmobile race. The race ran from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s.
Wyatt Kram says they’re doing it for a cause. They have partnered with the Casselton VFW, selling a limited number of raffle tickets for the top prize, a rare, restored John Deere snowmobile, and other prizes.
He says the proceeds will go to the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard and the Fargo National Guard to help build a $3.5 million building at the cemetery to protect funeral attendees from the elements.
Roger Kram, who is a Vietnam veteran, came up with the idea to recreate the iconic winter race, now referred to as the I-500 Challenge Ride.
The Kram’s crossed the Canadian border Monday in their snowmobiles, passed through Thief River Falls, and Detroit Lakes Wednesday. They’ll continue through Fergus Falls, Alexandria, and end in Elk River Saturday at a large vintage snowmobile show that draws thousands of people.
