There are a lot of changes that need to be made in the sports world. If I was named the “Czar of Sports” for North America here are some of the rules I would implement.
RULE #1: The NFL is a billion dollar business that has one of the dumbest postseason policies for a sport that moves as fast as football does. They don’t award the best officiating crew for postseason jobs, they take the best graded individuals and mix them together for the playoffs and mix them all together.
On the surface from even a casual fan this makes no sense at all and could explain why we have so many conferences and mess-ups like we saw this past weekend. Officials work together all year long, have each other’s positioning known, know what the other is thinking and seeing. It is no different than the teams they are officiating, the teams are in sync and that is the reason they are in the postseason. The crews that referee are now different and it shows, the quality of officiating is the same as bad play in the Pro Bowl.
RULE #2: Embellishment should be a penalty in the NFL. Whether it is pass interference or roughing the passer, the offensive player more times than not It happened Saturday when Derek Carr flopped on a roughing the passer call that shouldn’t have been, and it feels like wide receivers, knowing they have no chance of catching the ball fall to the ground claiming they were pushed or tripped up to draw and interference call and many times it works.
The NHL, NBA and soccer worldwide have this rule so there is no reason that it shouldn’t be in the most popular sport in this country. Flopping is so annoying to watch as a fan. I didn’t like it when Cris Carter did it to draw pass interference calls so I feel justified wanting it to be a rule in the whole league.
RULE #3: When there isn’t a collective bargaining agreement the owners and players association should be locked in a hotel together until a deal is done. The lack of trust and talks between the Major League Baseball owners and the Major League Baseball Players Association is embarrassing. This sport was surpassed by the NFL and NBA in popularity because of labor disagreements in 1994 and early 1995, and could crush the popularity even more with a delayed start to the baseball season. We here in the upper Midwest need baseball on the radio for Spring Training games and the start of the season in April to combat the mental anguish of a long cold winter and cabin fever. I really hope they don’t mess this up.
RULE #4: I don”t have a problem with the transfer portal in college sports, but I don’t think the player should leave a school for another program without the penalty of needing to take a year off unless their head coach left for another job to take another scholarship with another school just because they aren’t starting or wanted a change. If they want to leave and pay their way, that is fine, but jumping scholarship to scholarship This hopefully would curb the amount of kids entering the transfer portal.
RULE #5: Sports should be able to stream for free without blackouts. Whether it be radio or television the sports leagues and NCAA should tell the broadcasters to stream their content, not put local blackout restrictions on the stream and GO OUT AND SELL ADVERTISING TO MAKE UP THE COSTS! Only executives in the world of sports would do whatever they can to make it as hard as possible for the fans to listen or watch their product.
