MANKATO, Minn. – The U.S. Department of Education is investigating whether handicapped people can access Minnesota State University-Mankato’s new study pods.
The university installed the pods to provide students with individual study spaces so they can avoid COVID-19. The pods resemble old-time pay telephone booths. Professor Nancy Fitzsimmons filed a federal complaint in September alleging the handicapped can’t access the pods because the pods require a step to enter the booth. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights says it is investigating the complaint.
The university has declined comment beyond saying it has added four larger, handicapped-accessible pods around campus. Fitzsimmons says that’s not enough.
