MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) – A fire claimed a home south of Moorhead shortly before 8 a.m. Wed. Authorities responded to a call of a structure fire in the 4400 block of Highway 52.
Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting, who is also Dilworth Fire Chief says there were two people in the home that jumped from a second-floor window to escape, they are at a local hospital with minor injuries. There were pets inside the house at the time that didn’t make it out.
Empting says tragedies like this are tough to see, especially this time of year.
“You hate to come to something like this, especially this time of year with the holiday’s approaching. These are always difficult to be at,” Empting said.
“This time of year homeowners who have wood-burning stoves should make sure you’re cleaning your chimneys out pretty often so you don’t get soot build-up that could cause a chimney fire which could escalate into a chimney fire,” added Empting.
The cause of the fire is not known and is currently being investigated. Moorhead, Dilworth, and Sabin fire departments along with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire.
